Geography Modelling - compass skills & grid references ENVIRONMENT: ANY SUBJECT: Geography & Computing
Overview of activity Things to consider
Explore compass skills and grid references through movement. For example, draw a grid in chalk on the playground aligned with one of the four compass directions (e.g. N/E/S/W). Then get children to move around the grid based on instructions (e.g. move 4 spaces North - what grid reference are you in/what have you landed on (you could mark different squares with numbers/colours/symbols). This could be linked to the computing modelling above if relevant/required. You may need chalk. You will need 8 points of compass signs, and a compass per child/group. Better in a large space but could be done with a small group in the classroom.
