Raccoon circles - 2D shapes ENVIRONMENT: Large Space SUBJECT: Maths
Overview of activity Things to consider
In small groups, children create a Raccoon circle and explore 2D shapes by using different people to hold it in different places. E.g. circle (how could they make circle better - more people leading on to discussion of infinity), e.g. square (need to make 4 right angles and check 4 equal straight sides). Can they make different triangles and quadrilaterals and check properties using standard (metre sticks and rules) and non standard (someone’s hands/feet) units of measure. You will need tubular webbing (approx 4m long) - one per group for the Raccoon circle (see http://www.teamworkandteamplay.com/resources/raccooncircles.pdf) You may need rulers, metre sticks, protractors for measuring.
